Quotes on a College Football Playoff
ESPN’s Colin Cowherd asks questions about having a Playoff to Pac 10 commissioner Tom Hansen. This is great!
“There really is no interest exhibited by our presidents or chancellors or many others in having a playoff. The bowl system has been very good for college football.” Southeastern Conference Commissioner & BCS Coordinator Mike Slive – Sports Illustrated, Dec. 11, 2006 issue, page 79, “Playoff Please”
“Surely, the NCAA and Division I-A football can join the other 23 intercollegiate sports and devise a system that determines a true champion, preserves the integrity of the game and levels the playing field.”— Retired Brigham Young football coach LaVell Edwards, to the Senate Judiciary Committee October 2003 – quoted in USA Today, 9/9/2004. LaVell Edwards, who is in the College Football Hall of Fame, is also the last Head Coach to lead a Non BCS School to win the National Championship in College Football.
“We need to have these considerations now,” Machen said. “Fox wants now to extend our existing BCS deal and if we do that, we’re going to be stuck in the same place for the next six to eight years, with a system that could obviously be better.” University of Florida President Bernie Machen, March 28, 2007 on ESPN.com. The University of Florida is part of the Southeastern Conference, the same in which Mike Slive is the Conference Commissioner.
“To be frank with you, I don’t know what the reasons are not to have a playoff,” Paterno said during a speaking appearance in Pittsburgh. “You can talk about missing class and all that kind of stuff, [yet] you see basketball go on forever. You have a lot of bogus excuses, but obviously the majority of people who have the say don’t want it.” Penn State Head Coach Joe Paterno’s comments that appeared in an article on ESPN.com on May 23, 2008.
“The problem we have is you have 120 universities that are I-A and probably 25 would say they have a legitimate chance each year,” he said. “And you have presidents that for some reason look at it more as for the money than having a national championship on the field. They keep coming up with lame excuses about academics. Football players miss fewer classes than anybody.”
“Presidents take the money and go spend it, but they don’t worry about the business of making it better,” Tuberville said. “They keep coming up with excuses, yet we’re playing [the national championship game] Jan. 8. It’s hypocritical.” Auburn Head Coach Tommy Tuberville’s comments on ESPN.com on Oct.5, 2006.
